Learn Something New Everyday

It’s my understanding that it’s good to learn something new everyday. I frequently hear how beneficial it is to brain health to keep challenging yourself. It makes sense. Use it or lose it, right? So, what I realize that I really need to know is what I could write that would make a worthwhile blog for readers to spend their precious (and limited) time reading.

If writing a blog was just about writing any old story I could likely get a post up every day, but if you’re like me, you have a purpose for reading a blog that you want to meet as quickly as possible. For instance, I like to look up recipes on the internet, but I’ve found lately that I quick scroll through all the backstory about Great Grandma Whatshername bringing this particular shortbread cookie recipe to the New World on a steamer ship tucked in her petticoats while muttering to myself, “Yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah… Where’s the recipe?”

I mean no disrespect to the person who took the time to share what is likely a delightful story on his or her beautifully constructed website, but in the end, it’s about the cookies getting made, so I can eat them. If Great Grandma Whatshername isn’t going to appear in my kitchen and start baking, I’m over it pretty quickly.

So, what I need to figure out is what I can do for you – the reader. I’ve kicked around the idea of learning something new every day and sharing it, or at very least passing on the highlights once a week or so. I don’t doubt that some of what I learn and pass on might be a big, “No Duh!” to many, but here goes…

Yesterday I learned that if I just enter “Scan” in the search bar of my computer it reveals all of the scanning capabilities I’d thought I’d lost when my computer and printer/scanner were separated during our move. In retrospect, I don’t know where I thought these capabilities went, and I cannot deny that I feel like a doofus for only just figuring it out. On top of that, it took me coming back this morning with a fresh set of eyes to figure out if I used a different application, and I set it in a different way, I could save straight to PDF. Best of all, my scans would not come through sideways which undoubtedly isnt’ the best impression when the scan in question is a signed cover letter expressing interest in a job for which I’d like to be considered.

How’s that? Do you now feel emboldened to tackle your own computer conundrum, or are you cussing me out because there’s no cookie recipe at the end of this story?

How about a parting piece of wisdom I learned a long time ago, to make it worth your while? If you struggle to remember how to spell the word “Sioux” as in “Sioux Falls” or “Sioux City,” someone once told me to remember it this way: “So-I-Owe-U-X amount of dollars.” Genius! Right?!?!?!?
